Ok, I'm looking to upgrade from my cheapass 27" CRT to a LCD Highdef. I'm looking for reccomendations for a good budget TV under the 1k mark. I don't need 1080p or really anything fancy, just a decent highdef.

What are the brands to look at, stay away from, and the good bang for the buck ones? I am looking for reccomendations before I go start looking for them in stores. I will be buying the biggest warranty I can get with the TV so that won't be to big of a problem.

The DVD player will be an Oppo, that is the only thing I have decided so far.

Check out your local circuit city. Sony's XBR2 is being replaced by the XBR4's so you could probably score the floor model 40" for about that much considering use //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

But as far as near that budget. CC has a nice Vizio 37" at ~$700-$800, an Element (in store brand) 37" ~$500-$600, Toshiba 37" at usually $1100 and an LG 37" at ~$1200...

Of all 4, the LG is hands down the best all around, but best budget TV is probably the Vizio.

Are there any brands that just plain out **** or have major quality control issues?? Or are most LCD's basically the same thing no matter the brand, maybe a little bit of picture difference but virtually they are all the same thing?

ive seen some huger picture differences between diff lcds. I have a syntax olevia 37" (model 337H). It does not have a tuner but if you have a comcast box/satelite box a tuner isnt needed. I got my tv on sale @ newegg around march of this year. It was about ~$600 after taxes/shipping. So far i love the tv, it is 1080i (not p), but the difference is almost indistinguishable sitting more then a few feet away.

The only comparisons i can give to other lcds ive used extensively are computer monitors (i actually play computer games on the olevia 37" now) and an older visio lcd. Between the olevia and the visio, it was no comparison. The visio had horrible issues with skin tones but then again it was an older one so i dont know if the newer ones have the same problem

all i can suggest is that you google each model of tv's you find and try to read as many reviews as possible before making a decision

I would definitely recommend the syntax olevia tv i bought. The only complaint i have is that when the tv is off the power light glows a very bright blue. Its a little annoying at night, being i have the tv in my bedroom. They also a a version with a tv tuner if you need that, but i dont know what model# that one is.
