Boxes; Bigger always better?

Alrighty, Im getting ready to build a box for my 2 new subs. 2 polk 15''.... but the plans they have is only 1.50cu ft (Sealed). and the question I have is bigger better? I have some extra trunk space so I could make it larger but would it make it sound better or just a waste of space.

Are bigger boxes always better? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/eyebrow.gif.fe2c18d8720fe8c7eaed347b21ea05a5.gif

As in bigger I mean In Cu Ft.
I know what you meant and my post still stands. Increasing the size of an enclosure changes the alignment which will change the type of sound. If you're looking for more low end and a smoother response, a larger sealed enclosure might do you well. If you like a punchy and more aggressive bass, a smaller enclosure (or your current enclosure) will suit you well. If you're looking for more output, going ported might be the direction to take. The type of sound you're looking for will decide whether or not bigger will be better for you.

By punchy bass do you mean louder and harderhitting or just faster response?

I can't say louder because it will be louder in the upper bass frequencies but quieter in the lower bass frequencies. A smaller enclosure will have an increase in upper bass and a decrease in lower bass. There will also be a stronger air spring which will give it a tighter sound and increased transient response. If both enclosures are sealed, the transient response will be pretty similar so it's mainly just a frequency response change and mechanical power handling change.

I think the bigger the the box the better it sounds... to a point though you dont want some 30cuft enclosure for subs //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

im the type of guy that takes the entire trunk for a box cause i enjoy the lows

Why? A lot of people enjoy infinite baffle sub setups.

Infact that WGti in your sig is great for an IB install......

u may gain spl but loose sq or vice versa pending on box size/type it's all depends on what your looking for out of your sub

I put an ED 15A in a 2.4cu.ft sealed box and the lows were UNGODLY, oh my goodness. Everything in my car moved when i played a song with plenty of low bass. That thing moved ALOT of air.

BUTTT, the upper bass frequency were SOFT, almost non-existant compared to the low end.

This was back when i used to listen to mainstream hiphop. Now i listen to artists like Canibus, Immortal Technique, etc... plus som jazz and r&b..but anywayz...

When i played some Lil Jon tracks, omg, the bass on Throw It Up, Rep Yo City, Get Low,etc.. moved MASSIVE amounts of air in my car and gave me the ultimate massage.

BUTTT when I'd play No Limit Soldiers, the drum was so soft that I swear some STOCK 6x9's couldve delivered more impact.

So I agee with INSANES 100% .. And I think a qtc from 8-8.8, maybe even 9 would be a nice medium, since that would produce nice upper bass frequencies, and the cabin gain would compensate for the decrease in low bass from the Subwoofer in that size enclosure. Which would seem to give a nice flat response.

Do a little research on enclosure alignments and how they affect the sound characterisitics of the box (start with a butterworth alignment and learn from there)... it wont take much. Then pop your sub into winisd and find the alignment you need to get the kind of sound you are after. The size of the box I built would depend alot on the rest of the system, such as how low the front stage could be high-passed.
