Boston ProSeries 10.5LF SUbwoofer????

Hey guys, just tossing around an idea... Hopefully some of the "old school" guys can give me some info here.

I have always loved Boston Pro subs, and now I have the chance to get a 10 inch to put in my JL Audio Stealthbox. The box uses .625^3ft and the pro calls for .5^3ft airspace. I am not sure how leanient the airspace can be with te 10" as I have always have 12" Pro's. I always put them in a 1.1-1.15^ft boxes to get a litlle more low end, but this is a bigger jump, percentage wise.

Do you think that this is going to be ok, or should I find something to take away some of the airspace inside the box? Do I use more, less, or no polyfill in the box?

Please give me some opinions, tips, and trcks to make this work best.

Thanks!

I use to use the 10.5 LF subs , but found the 12.5s to be just as fast. I think the Pro Series Boston subs are the single best SQ subs ever made. They also happen to get REAL LOUD.

I would screw a piece of wood inside the enclosure to make it agree with Boston's .5 cu ft specs myself. I found placing them in a larger enclosure made them lose some snap and focus in the 45 hz range. I would not use fiberfill either , as this will just make them behave as if they were in an even larger enclosure.

You are using these for SQL correct ? If so , there is VERY little material with information below 30 hz anyways. I would not think it to be wise to attempt to make the subs play lower than what they were designed for. If you are looking for more air to be moved , making the bass seem much stronger , i would buy the 12.5 LFs instead. This is exactly why I chose them over the 10s when I bought Bostons the second time around.

Good Luck

I can not say that I am running an SPL or a SQ set-up, as those seemed ot be designed strictly for exactly that and not daily listening. This is my main concern. I want a sub that is going to play LOUD and still sound good at the same time. It needs to be able to keep up wiht the Diamond D9's I have in the front doors, but also give me some nice volume when I am driving the 4Runner with the back window doewn. Know what I Mean?

It will be powered by a JL Audio 500/1 and I am contemplating picking up a 2ohm sub, as the JL Amp is said to put out about ~730+ watts as 2ohms. However, I am wondering if I am going to loose a little cleanliness if I do it that way (Damping factor)

Any advice?

Yes ..... No matter what you say , everything you have said points to your taste being loud sound quality. With your talk about clean , playing along with D9 components , damping factor , ect ..... you are definitely a SQ person , but wanting LOUD SQ .... This is the ultimate for daily listening.

Having said that , I would ditch the JL amp and buy a good class A/B amp myself. Regardless 500 w is enough power to make Boston Pros really sing.

My opinion on the Pro Series is the same as in my first post to you. The only difference is , with you wanting loud with your windows down , I would go with two 12's instead. I know I'm selling mine , but that's NOT why I say this ....

Want the best possible solution ? Buy a great Class A/B amp and get two 12s for your particular application.

Good Luck

Thnaks for all the GREAT input Blue. I may consider the offer.
Does anyone else have any info on these?
You bet buddy ..... Let me know if I can help at all. You may want to look at Alumapro Alchemy MX , JL Audio W6v2 , and Diamond Audio D6 .... All of those are pretty good at sound quality loud.

With a sealed setup you can deviate a bit from the suggested box size a bit without hurting things much at all. You also have to consider the amount of air that the motor structure displaces. The box should be pretty close to spec and as blue mentioned, you can always add wood blocks to the inside of the box to reduce the volume.

Blue-you should know that the size of the cone has nothing to do with how "fast" the sub is. The only thing that really matters is the Le of the voicecoil. The 10.5 and 12.5 have the same motor and voicecoil assembly and in respect to "quickness," aka transient response, they will be the same unless one or the other is in a poorly designed/built box.

Yep .... I know and you are correct. However I figured it would be easier to state the fact with simplicity that either size was equally great sounding.

Regardless , thanks Taxi. Posts like yours brings greater understanding of the audio ways. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Guys, thanks for the help. I am running a D6 inthe stealthbox right now, but I am not getting the overall volume I was from the JL w3v2 (before it blew) so this is why i am even considering the boston pro sub again...

yea man, .1 cubes wont make a very audible different at all. i would prolly use some solid foam over wood inside the box if i wanted to cut box volume down tho. makes it that much lighter (like that matters with .6 cubes and a single 12).

seriously. how about this, listen to it with .625 cubes for about a week, then remove the sub, put in .125 cubes worth of material, and then see how different it sounds. i bet you will hardly notice a change at all, or you really wont.

but try to be completly objective, the problem with a test like this - is you KNOW something changed, so psychoacoustics says that your brain will try to make you hear a difference, when there might not be one.

*shrug*

i wouldnt change the volume. its close enough not not matter IMO.

But is it safe to assume that I will get MORE volume out of the Boston Pro sub than I will with the D6 sub with 500W? (The boston is also a 2ohm load as opposed to the 4ohm load of the D6)

If they are both 10" subs , there will be very little difference in their output. I had a 12" D6 sub and found it really good , especially considering how inexpensive it was. The D6 was not on the same level as the Boston 12.5 LF where SQ is concerned , but was Just as loud. Their effiency and output capability was pretty much equal. I had 600w going to these subs.

HTH

PS : NO single 10" SQ sub is going to give you the output you want in a 4-runner. You will need to look at a dedicated SPL sub , or at the very least go ported if you are trying to stay with a single 10" sub ..... There simply is no substitute for cone area ....
