Bored on rainy day, Look what I made!

Got bored as hell, raining out so I can't do much with the car, so, I nerded out and finished building me a freakin laser that burns shit. Don't believe me? Its actually quite simple, heres some pics and a vid. BTW, I had to make the lens completely DIY, I mean I had to use 2 skateboard bearings to mount the lens in the screw off part of an old flash light and then hot glued the laser diode into place in the other end of the flash light so it focuses when I tighten/loosen it. All parts were from radioshack that I had on hand, except for the laser diode, that came from my computers dvd burner

Don't mind the dates on the pics, my camera is all kinds of F-ed up and I cant seem to get the date to work right, like it will date one pic for like a year ago and then the next like 2 months ahead, its retarded or something.

Burns anything black or dark enough to absorb to wavelength of the laser. Pops balloons light matches, cuts electrical tape and shit, its pretty lame, but cool as hell at the same time. Let me know what you think.

Pretty cool, how far can you burn shit from? Could I start a fire on my neighbors house about 30 feet away?

i dont know if his could...how many mw is it? i have one that can...you just have to adjust the lens right they dont really lose power at that distance

I bought one of those crazy green lasers about a year ago, that was pretty fcking powerful

I bought it at a garage sale for $50 bucks

Had no batteries.

WENT home and saw it goes online for about 600 bucks.

That thing was fun as hell to play with, I need to find it and mess around with it again.

That little sucker would burn anything

Well, as for lighting fires from like 30 feet I highly doubt it with mine but with a high quality green one you might be able to. As for the mw of mine I dont have testing equipment or anything but Id say somewere around threshold power as far as burning shit goes, maybe around 150 or so mw's. I can however pop balloons and light matches and shit from up to about 20' or so. Like i said, I built the whole lens and shit by hand using the collimating lens from a cheapo red one. I got a green one, ratshack brand, its pretty cool but dont burn anything its a 5mw. I ripped the diode from a 4x dvd burner, old as shit btw, so its not very powerful but with the driver I built i can run it for freakin ever off the same set of aaa's and not lose much burning abilities.

I had wanted to buy one for the longest time, but, building it yourself is easy as **** and costs less than $100 to build. I tell you, it was a ***** fashioning the lens assembly how I did, but I did it and it works great. I actually got a cigarette to light off of it. When it is focused there is very fine point in the beam were it will burn shit, the beam gets smaller leaving the lens and larger after that specific point I was talking about. Like this > -

Its too bad people abuse lasers and make them more and more unpopular. In the past year I have seen at least 2 articles in the paper about some dumbass shining a green laser at like a car, person, airplane, whathave you, and its bs.

my guess would be somewhere in the 70-80 range...i have a 100 mw red (color doesnt matter a mw is a mw) and i can pop balloons, cut electrical tape, light matches etc.
