at 16ft, was tipping the boat an issue? or is that only with the aluminum hulls...
no, but we were always very weary of rough seas....

I think the only way you are going to find out though, is when its too late. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

You're right, if you are riding in salt water, you will have to pay more attention to the boat/system. This would include flushing the outdrive when you are finished with it. Not everyone does this every single time they go out, but if you can get into the habit of it, your outdrive parts will last longer.

Where will you be boating - calm water or rough? I think that would/should be #1 question to ask yourself.

I just snagged an older deep-V because the lake I will be on can get quite rough and I want stability and safety...

I have a 2006 Parker 2320SL (23’). It’s a fishing boat, not a lake cruiser. Its kept in saltwater and try to use it twice a week. This is my 3rd season with a boat (2nd boat), and I can tell you that it’s very high maintenance. I am always spending money on something, either maintenance or upgrades. You need to winter-ize in the winter, summer-ize in the spring, pay for storage (or docking) all year, pay for gas, oil, etc. I probably spent over $5K this year so far, and over $10K last year easily. And that is nothing compared to some other guys I know. My boat is still pretty much brand new, so keep in mind that an older boat will obviously cost more to maintain.

If you get a little boat bass boat just to mess with on the lake, and you’re handy with motors and DIY-ing, it might not be too bad. Good luck. Being on the water is one of the most relaxing things you can do. But getting back to the dock and scrubbing the boat down for an hour really sucks!

You can find out a lot of info at http://www.thehulltruth.com

And remember,

BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand!!!!!!!!!!!!

winterizing is for teh weak...not too mention he lives in fl...

oil and gas is not maintenance...
Winterizing is for the weak? Easy for you to say living in TX. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

And I never said gas, oil is maintenance, its a COST he'll have to worry about. Maybe not so much on a little bass boat, but still something to think about.

//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif i know several people out on the water, including myself, in the cold, even when it is been below freezing... i just like to get my monies worth and throw on a wet suit or dry suit, hood, booties, gloves, etc.

if you are in fact not considering oil and gas maintenance and since he wont have to winterize/de-winterize (because he lives in FL) what other costs will he incur that would categorize the boat as expensive to maintain?

You're right! Boating is totally free!

Jon boat is smaller and typically has a flat bottom and a squared nose from 12-16 foot, you can buy them real cheap, usually under 1000.00. Dont handle much of a load or HP but decent for cruising small lakes. Medium range you could get like 16 foot Crstliner or Alumacraft, something with a Deep V that can handle rougher surfaces and doesnt mind a 50 horse motor on the back. My dad just bought a real nice crestliner with 60 horse Mercury, but it was pretty wrell rigged for like 15k. You can get them as plain as you want for expenses. been around and owned boats my whole life. Not much more expensive tha n a car if you do your routine maintenance, but there are issues. I have 1993 Cobalt 21 footer. For being 15 years old it has minimal issues, and there is no place like on the water.

Heh, its usually the small stuff that many of us don't bat an eye at that makes it all add up:

- is there additional licensing/registration needed for the boat or trailer?

- accessories such as life jackets, paddles (that sometimes break), rope, etc.

- if he's into fishing, there's all the supplies that go along with that

- after time, you start dealing with the wear and tear of the boat and trailer (scratches, scuffs, wheel bearings, rollers, broken tail lights, crappy safety chain, ripped seats, ripped canopy, cleaning supplies, etc.)

- then of course there's the tune-ups, replacement of worn parts, maybe the odd dead battery, damaged prop and impeller

- then of course there's the unforeseen issues like a cracked block because temps dropped below freezing overnight, or the rock you didn't see...

- don't know about you guys, but gas always seems to be much higher at a marina verses the gas station too..

Gas is cheap. It was only $3.69 at my marina last weekend. And my tank only holds 150 gallons.
