BMW HK Stereo - Info?

Anyone know how the BMW HK Stereo is wired? I have found info on how the main amp is wired, but was trying to find info on how the subs are wired. It looks like there is a small "black box" processing the sub input, I don't know if it is amplifying or filtering (crossover) or both. I want to replace the box and the HK sub speakers with an aftermarket amp and sub.

If you have experience with BMW's Harmon-Kardon setup, please let me know.

ive got the hk stereo on my 330i, to be honest i would try and avoid doin anything by myself cuz if i had a really hard time with my jetta (monsoon system out, my system in) i would def have a harder time with the bmw. however if u only want to replace the subs, i would slice into the stock subs wires and get an amp with high level inputs for ur subs... shoud be no biggie.
