the car: '04 330xi
the mains: hybrid audio technologies clarus 6 mids + legatia 1v1 tweeters
the sub: image dynamics idq-12v3
the amp: zapco dc reference dc650.6
--------------------------------------------------------------
this is my wife's car and the goal was to achieve excellent sound quality while retaining a factory look. believe the goal was accomplished quite well - without knowing the car has an aftermarket stereo installed, you would never know there was an aftermarket stereo installed.
metal behind the oem woofer locations in the doors required cutting.
the oem woofer mounting bits also had to be removed to allow the new drivers to tuck under the door cards.
now the clarus woofers will fit, and will be able to utilize the airspace in the doors to breath.
a layer of second skin's damplifier pro and a layer of overkill pro was applied to the outer door skin. a panel was also cut from 1/4" baltic birch to seal up the access hole.
the woofers were then mounted to double layers of 3/4" birch rings and a layer of damplifier pro was applied over the inner door skin.
the woofers were aimed slightly up and in, just enough to still tuck under the factory woofer opening.
the legatia 1v1 tweeter rings were trimmed off and the tweeters were mounted on-axis behind the factory sail panel grills.
the amp was mounted to a board secured into the spare tire well over the spare tire. all cables were made long enough to allow the amp to be pulled out and set on the ground should spare tire access be necessary.
the sub fires through the ski pass behind the rear seat arm rest.
and that's that!
with just a little tuning via the on-board processing built into the amp, it sounds absolutely fantastic!
