Blown solo x; underpowered?

I was a believer you can't blow a sub by underpowering it. I had a solo x 18 d2 with an ma audio hk4k pushing around 3k watts. I had the system running for 7ish minutes and the sub cut out, and started smoking. Blown sub. Any thoughts?

enclosure could be too small.. a HK 4000d WILL NOT burn up a X 18 in the right box..

Box is 8.5 cubes. I checked ohm load multiple times and with rise about 1.4. And to Audioholic, you asked the same question I'm asking you guys....

I participate in Midwest spl and they clamp your systems. The most I pushed was. Like 3210w. And no clipping problems

A clamp meter tells you nothing about whether or not the signal is clipped.

Bought it on this site. Was no more than a couple months old and it still was stiff when I first got it. And clamp meter gave me power, nothing about clipping you're correct.
