blown or just exceeding limitations?

I was adjusting my amp trying to get the setting tuned in a lil better when on one of my subs I heard a mild thump/pop on the lower notes. One sub made the noise each time and the other sub never did.. I backed the gain off a tad and it stopped.. Sub still sounds good and hits hard.. Never smelt anything or seen any smoke coming out the port.. Ideas? If it was clipping wouldn't both subs have done it?

Sound like the subs were bottoming out.. subs can't handle the power from the amp
The 1st sentence I can understand however w/o info, how can you tell that his subs can't handle the power w/o more info needed?

ANY sub can be handled by an amp....it's the owner/user that should know how to hook it up properly, set gains correctly, fine tune it, etc.
