Blown or broken tinsel?

My sub had been acting weird for a couple days, so I just pulled the remote and RCA's off of the amp. I got to investigating on Saturday and found that if I pushed in just a touch on the cone of the sub, it would work. I let go, it would stop. So I pulled the sub out and swapped in the 2nd one I have and everything is good now. The thing is though... if I push the cone down a little, the coils still read 3.9 - 4.0 ohms. I'm thinking it's a tinsel, but from what I can tell they are woven and I cannot repair them. What do you guys think? Sub in question is an Alpine Type X 12" SWX-1242D dual 4.

If you can get the dustcap off and if you can scrape enough epoxy or whatever they use to secure the coil leads to the tinsels you may be able to test which lead it is and jump it with a new tinsel. I haven't looked at a type X in a bit though....not even sure you could get a new tinsel soldered onto the terminal end with the cone intact.

I'd suspect either broken tinsel or broken coil lead.

i'm pretty sure i can't get the dustcap off without ****** it up. and the tinsels are woven and the terminals end of it is weird. it can't come apart without breaking it i think. you think my pushin it to 1500w instead of the recommended 1000w might have had something to do with this? lol

dood listen. hairdryer and a razorblade...... the best friends you can have when taking a dustcap off

even with the dustcap off, i still have no way to attach a new tinsel to the terminals. i don't know enough about this kind of stuff to dive off into it. i had 2 and i just put the other in so i'm not desperate. lol

i think i'll roll my gains pack just a touch //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

Does anyone have an idea what this is worth as it is? I haven't fixed it, and it's technically not 'blown'. A local guy offered $20 //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

I've seen these re-coned. What can I get for it? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/greedy.gif.5a53e6246569d7ab79867170f3b06629.gif
