well i had the image dynamic subs and i blew one and toasted the other one it sounded like. So i got some jl audio w6 subs 10" dual voice coil. I went to the shop and told them how i would like these setup with a little more play on the headunit to power them. They did that but they said be careful not to play them high on certain hard bass songs or u can blow them. Now the question is when u go to high and hear liek a flapping or pop what does that mean it reached its max excurioson? The subs are only a month old from a friend who sold his system cause of money and they sound good as hell. Now on this one bass song i cranked them to see how much they can handle and went up little by little and heard some flapping or popping then turned them down right away.

they still sound fine but i guess every song i will have to do adjustments and all to play them if i go from a range of hard bass to not so hard? Also when they pop or flap like that what is that max excurioson? I know when i heard that. that is not good and tunned them down a little

Hey there..I have 2 12" Jlw3's..They tend to FLAP and POP a lot too...Mostly this is due to the SUBS not being designed the best..But the best thing to do is check your gains on your amp..You may have them too high causing too much power being sent through the the subs causing the VC's to flap and/or the Dustcap's trying to position itself out of place...Try not to run the bass on your HU no higher than 0 or 1 bass...also check how your subs are wired..You may have them bridged draining max power from the amp..which means you have to be careful..I have blown a couple of these subs.I'll warn you ahead of time..Those flapping and popping noices..Can end up being BLOWN SUBS..SO check your amp..Also you may be turning your HU up to too high of volume levels..Get back to me on what kind of AMP you got, how it is wired, also what kind of Head Unit you have...I'll further help you after you give me this information

hey i have the 500 watt jl audio amp. the subs are 6 ohm 10" dvc. I got it proffessionly hooked up at a very good store. Here is the weird thing about there installation though. I asked him about that flap or pop and he said yeah that means to much power. he says he wired them down to somehow i believe 1.5 ohm. The weirdest thing is that they always made it so i can keep the subs on 10 out of 15 on my alpine 7878 headunit it is a very good one. i asked them about this and they said then i have more play in the subwoofer and therefore they set it so even if i maxed it out on most songs it wont pop. it only popped on this one song very high up. i asked the installer about this and said lay off on the sub level then on the songs u know have heavy bass. i mean they know what there doing so i dont doubt them u can check how clean they made my system in the pic area so i trust them plus they do alot of very expensive 20 thousand dollars systems so it is not a half *** place. just weird how most people say have it like on one or 2 with the woofer. they usally tell me a good spot is 10 for most songs and then lower or higher for others.

i mean yes that is another problem. i have the mb quart q series top of the line component set. they get very very extremely loud im telling you. and i tend to listen to music way to loud it doesnt seem it but when im , getting the middle finger pointed at in traffic, pulled over by a bike cop LMFAO, and by a lady saying omg in a minivan with kids, and my grandparents coming running out the house becuase they thought there was an accident cause the upstairs floor had vibrations. i guess it is a bit to loud? i dont really thing it is all that loud but people are always telling me **** that is sick. i think i ruined my hearing or something. all together i spent almost 4000 dollars on the system

help is apprecitated.

Hmm..sounds like you are running the wrong ohm for the subs..But you'll be ok..Just CHECK the gains on the amp..cause poppng and flapping isn't right..But mine used to do it on really HARD hitting bass as well..Just check your amp and turn it down..Bite the bullet and have less bass but you'll save the SUBS and the AMP..By the way..If your gettng all those problems from neighbors and grandparents from your system..sounds like you are DEFINATELY playing it too loud..Don't trust everything an installer at a place tell you! learn for yourself and you'll be set..Hey my first system..The installers were PROS they did USAIC systems..They they turned my amp all teh way up blowed my subs in 5 hours..So that tells you something!

hey the quick response is cool. yeah i mean they only popped or flapped on this one song. so why is that they have the headunit set that way and is it that bad where i have to put it on like 10 not 1 0r 2? also i dont know what the gain is for my amp since ti doenst say gain on it anywhere i checked it maybe labeled something different. i will turn the gain down i guess. but it seems like there okay on all the other songs and i just listen and adjust the sub woofer to the song that is on or the cd what kind it is. u have aol or something i like chatting about systems and it is easier lol. my name is support peps on instant messenger

so you have 2 6 ohm DVC subs..

that wire each to 3 ohms, parallel, and then wire them together in parallel to 1.5 ohm...

you ahve the JL Audio 500/1?

It will easily handle 1.5 ohm..

tehre is no such thign as running teh "Wrong ohm for the subs". You can however present the AMP with the wrong (too low of a load) load. however, JL's am,ps are rated to 1.33 ohms, and should be plently stable..

that is not your problem...

your problem sounds to me like you are jst not quite giving them enough power...

that flappiong that you are hearing is your sub distorting..

set your gains properly, (turn thegain down to nuthin, bass boost to nuthing, turn your music up to normal levels, slowly increases teh gain until you hear distortion... back it off a bit...).

Now all you avhe to do to keep your subs from being damaged is to listen for distortion and dont let it happen..

if you ehar the flapping, turn the volume down!
