Bigbangtheory........?

Are concepts not invented from nothing?
My point was that the cumulative knowledge of humans over thousands of years leading to new discoveries which we percieve as being so much more impressive than their ancient counterparts, do not in any way signify an increase in intelligence, or 'smartness'.

We have to define technology before we decide when we started having and using it. My engineering texts are quite adamant that technology has existed for millenias and there is a general consensus that our implementation of technology is now greater and growing at a greater rate than ever in the past. Following the timeline of advances they call technology, it is hard to argue that.

I would say that we are much smarter than we used to be. We have evolved intellectually at a great rate since the Age of Enlightenment, thanks to exactly the type of rational thinking that religion religates evil and useless.

Please note that I consider "smarter" to mean that we know more about ourselves the things around us than we did in the past. I don't see how you can argue that, so I wonder what definition of "smarter" is being used here.

All thanks to my friend hank and propane. "The clean burning fuel"

Smartness is a cumulative thing. You're talking about ingenuity (which we've got a lot of, by the way).

i definitely am more on your side with this one, but i can understand rashaad's side as well.

Basically, we understand things easier than they used too back then.

I just say what I believe...acts of self interest benefit society. Deeds based on that motivation alone are of benefit. People become doctors, get the best education so they can become wealthy, in the meantime, they utilize the skills developed out of self-interest to save lives. I really do not believe this is bad thing, unless the motivation is based on the tradeoff of short term gains at the expense of the long term.
It's nice to think that, and I understand the logic it comes from, however I don't agree that it holds true often enough to work, and it is the faith in this concept that has gotten us to the shitty situations we are in today throughout the world, if you ask me.

You are detrimental to my argument.
Indeed.

no, you ask god for forgiveness and you shall receive. That is the way i have always seen it. You shouldn't go to hell just because you aren't religous. I am a very good person, but i don't go to church and am not religous. Why would i be rejected to heaven? I don't think it works that way man.
You don't understand the concept of faith or it's value. The misconceptions and mis-teachings of the concept of God and faith are the primary reasons, imo, for so many who see it as such a ridiculous things.

The terminology isn't that important, and is debatable as it is used differently in everyday language from person to person.

But yes, I'm saying that knowing things, and the build up of information which leads to new things (technology), isn't all that impressive or remarkable, compared to the ability to apply and use what we know to do incredible or complex things.

Sometimes, people do not act in their long-term best interest. It's funny how the economics side of this discussion does lean toward a religious focus, absent a God. I do believe that the fundamentals of the bible are good. The whole God's existance thing bothers me. I am not sure he is necessary if people did the right thing...

The ten commandments is a good reason i think religion is all just made up. I mean, you can look at it and almost tell that it was made from people in the past begging for the world to become a better place, therefore made it seem like it was being told from a religous figure such as god.

That is a very good point there, I believe the same way.

To me, that does not preclude the existance of a God.
