But can one not do what is right because of another theory...such as game theory. For instance, a guy in front of me ran out of gas while I was on my way to the dentist. I stopped, gave him a ride to a gas station...took him back to his car, and helped him get on his way.I see human life as a test of free will, in a sense. Do we ignore the needs of others and focus on our selfish desires? Or do we strive to do what is right and avoid giving in to the temptation of instant gratification/greed/revenge/envy/etc..
I know alot of people argue that you're then just 'holding back and restricting yourself from enjoying things' and shit like that...
Why? Well, many reasons. 1) someone I care about may be broke down and if that guy sees them he may recall the time somone helped him. 2) I may do a job interview and he may give me an edge based on my character outside of work.
I believe that pure self interest causes people to act in a manner that benefits society. People who opt for the quick gain are not acting in their best self interest.
