Big vs Small Tight vs Boom

Ok I know this is a newbie question, but ive searched and answers are so specific to layouts and personal tastes that I was hoping for a more direct answer.

What I have is good boom, but not really detailed unless the music has a lot of bass. What I want is tight acurate bass. Any suggestions?

Would a smaller box give more accurate bass? Would removing some or all of the stuffing?

I would hate to say this but with that setup it is not going to get that extremely loud neither. I have not played with those subs. But if it is completely filled with poly take like half out. I normaly do a 1/4-1/2 poly to taste.

im not overly concerned with loud. I just want there to be full bass. Now there is decent boom on lows, but there is unwanted boom on voice and just over all messy bass. Will fill and box size change this?

sounds like you need to low pass filter your subs, and HPF your highs/mids

well the amp only has a high pass, normal pass, and low pass. It is set to the low pass. Is there any way to further adjust this short of an EQ? Its all hooked up to a factory lexus system.

I took out about half the stuffing, and I cant tell any difference. It does seem to play muddy bass mostly during vocals.

do u know what the LPF cut off is at. im gonn asume around 80Hz wich is about right for subs. just flick the switch to LPF and be done with it. also take the poly fill out. 1.2 cu ft is big enough for a 10" P1

looks like RF amps have a variable Xover, put it on LPF and set it around 80ish

The box is alot on large size for a sealed 10" if you want a tight punchy bass. That woudl eb the reason it is boomy.. IF your other setting sare correct.

liek others attes ditch alot of the polyfill.

thanks for all the advice. Im going to take 80% of it out and see how that sounds.

The amp is on LowPass and there is still muddy bass on vocals.

RF suggests .6 CF for that particular sub.

If i were to alter the size of the box...

Does it matter if the sub is in the center of the box? Id rather pull apart one side and cut off a few inchs that open up both sides.

or instead of doing that go to the hard ware store and buy blocks of wood and glue them in the box and walla no cutting of the box

other than having to re-carpet the box and acutally doing the work, i would love to loose a few inches of this box. the 60/40 seats measure to 20 and the box is 23 would be nice if it matched closer. I have the box apart and Im taking inside measurements. I may have over estimated when i said the CF being 1.2...

looks like the volume is .78 - .59 for the speaker so the volume is .74. RF recommends .65.

should i still remove most all of the stuffing?

If you do, it'll sound different. If you don't, it'll sound different. Either way won't hurt the sub any, so try them both. Experience is a greater tool than any given advice.
