okay thats what i thought but it said you could do either..not sure how you would replace all those little tiny wires coming from the alt to bat..plus all those little wires are covered up by that black protection tubing stuff so that would also make it very difficult if i was replacing them.

 
Some people replace them to 'clean up' their install...but for the most part, you shouldn't replace them.

Its best to just add on. Current will flow through the larger wire, then when the resistance of that wire is greater than the resistance of the smaller wire, a portion of the electric will flow through the smaller wire.
