Best Amp for the job

Alright - i'm thinking about different setups for a new system.

Anyway - what would be the most effective way to wire 2 Dual 2 Subs running 600 Watts RMS each.

Should i try to find an amp that runs 500 x 2 @ 2 ohms, or should i run 2 amps at 600 x 1 @ 2 ohms

i'm rather new to this, and by the time i actually get the system i should have a bit more knowledge

but how would you all go about this?

no you would run a single mono block amp @ 2ohms. When you wire 2 dual 2ohm subs together you get either a 2ohm or 8ohm load. A single dual 2ohm sub can be wired to 1ohm or 4 ohm.

then i'd be looking for a mono block amp that powers 1000 - 1500 watts @ 2 ohms

the subs are 600 RMS - 1000 Peak - so would would running 1500 watts between the two be the same as 750 to each? and would that be sustainable for the subs consistently?

thanks for the help - all of its very appreciated

correct... what is your budget? do you want to buy new or used? ebay or retail?

well i won't be purchasing any of this soon

i'm heading to school for MECP in the fall

once i get back i look to start working at crutchfield again (installing rather than warehouse like i was a year ago)

so i'll be getting all the stuff pretty cheap - and it'll all end up being rockford fosgate (unless i find a new company to obsess over which is kind of unlikely)

budget isn't a huge deal

1 more question - would it be better to get a single mono block amp powering both at 2 ohms - or run 2 mono amps each powering 1 sub at 1 ohm?

its usually best to run a single amp if you can. Also, you "can" exceed the RMS of a speaker at your own risk. Just remember if the sub blows.. you can't really blame the sub. Most of the time though you are safe by going a little over the RMS... just not always.

in all likeliness i'll probably end up underpowering the subs

i'll probably end up running only 500 watts RMS to each sub instead of the full 600 they can take or the 750 which would be the other option.

thanks for all the feedback guys

depends on the amp at that point. If its a high quality amp they usually put out a bit more than listed so i would use a 500 rms at that point but if its an el cheapo amp they usually put out less so I would get the 750 rms.

Its looking like a Rockford Fosgate Power 1500-1bd Amp

750 watts x 1 @ 4ohms

1000 watts x 1 @ 2ohms

1500 watts x 1 @ 1ohm

Rockfords never done me wrong (as i'm sure you could guess) so yeah...
