Best $230 sub+amp combo

My buddy has $230 and wants to buy a sub and amp. Currently he is looking at the MA audio 1000XL 10' and is not quite sure about the amp and performance. He would be buying this off of ebay for $115 shipped, that leaves another $115 for an amp on ebay, what should he get and would the MA be a good choice.

Also we would be building a box for it ourselves, and would a 2.6cubic foot ported box tuned at 36hz be good for it. Its the same box i have for my Type-R.

if hes getting it of ebay why not go for a kicker cvr and port it? its about 50-60 shipped on there.

How about a nice 12" type-R with 400 rms in a 2.6cubic foot box tuned at 36hz? Would that be pretty nice?

it should sound good but it can take much more than 400wrms...

My buddy wants to know if the alpine type-r 10" sub will pound louder than the kicker cvr 10" and the MA audio 1000xl 10" at 500rms.
