Bass That Punches - Achieved by sealed or ported box?

I want to know, i have been told by many things by people that claim to be Car audio gods, but in the end didnt know anything at all..

Im under the impression that if you want bass that punches you need to have a sealed box, im running a 12" sub 500w rms but im only feeding 250 rms; in a ported box. The sub is really loud and has really good rolling bass, but when it comes to punch it doesnt quite hit..

the box was made for 29hz and i made it exactly as the instructions from one of the tools said, its built perfect and sounds good. I just want to know..

If i make a sealed box for this sub, will it increase the punch but still keep most of the loudness / rolling bass..

And if a sealed box is a good way to go, then here are specs of sub, if i mention a name there will be argueing between people and me so the name doesnt matter, just how the sealed box should be made..

Specs:

Program (conservative)

T Yoke: Industrial Chromed Hex bolt retained,

Bumped and Vented

Double damper magnetic motor assembly

Cooling: Double Vented (T Yoke and Motor Side vents)

Voice Coils: 4 Layer Dual 4 Ohm High Temperature black Aluminum

Voice Coil Diameter: 2.2"

Nominal impedance: 4 ohms / per coil

DC resistance (Re): 3.2 ohms each coil

Frequency range: 20 Hz-1.1 kHz

Fs:30 Hz

QTS:.526

QES:.614

QMS:7.698

VAS:56L

SD:.0491M

SPL:90 dB 1W/1m

Xmax:16mm

Thanks ahead of time..

People who want "punchy" bass really aren't talking about true subbass most of the time...they are talking about the upper bass/lower midbass region.

True subbass isn't "punchy" at all....it's slow and thick. The "punch" happens in the 50hz+ range.

If you want "punch"....upgrade to some good midbass speakers.

Yes, i was afraid of that, the sub i have is rated very good for low bass, but im happy with this and my song collection is rap genre, but my friends are the ones who keep telling me i need punch somthing that hits hard on the chest, im happy with my low bass but if i can have the best of both worlds then why not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Whats' the internal volume of the enclosure? If it's around 2cuft then the response curve is actually pretty similar to sealed (only louder) which leads me to believe that you wouldn't gain anything by going sealed with this driver and the "problem" may be due to how the box is loading into the cabin space.

**** 'punch' once you get 140+ under 40Hz, you will learn the meaning of life.

"getting punched in the chest" is all well and good, but when you can crank out the lows to the point of confusion and spontaneous laughter, you'll know where it's really at

anybody can achieve loud "drowning out all of your other music" bass with a 200w amp from best buy and a sony xplod.

it takes real equipment, real power, and a good install to get those lows. your friends will shut the hell up

the internal volume of my box is around 2.5cuft so yea, THANKS for all the replys //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

it would be nice to have major power behind real low tones but im in the starting stage for car audio now, when i get some extra cash i can dish up for the good stuff.
