no, you should buy a DMM or o-scope and do it right. just turning it up will probably end badly. as i mentioned before, a very small movement of the gain knob can change your output voltage a lot (especially once you get towards the higher sensitivety range).
also you should at least get a line-out adapter for you ipod. running it out of the headphone jack just gives you another place to introduce distortion into the signal.

How much are the line out adapters? yea i should look into gettin a dmm whats the cheapest i can get one for? I have an auxillary input for my deck and then it connects to an input cable for my ipod but it is a headphone jack cable because alpine didnt come out with the cables that connect directly to your ipod until next years models. I have the 2005 model deck and they came out with it in 2006.

i used that one before i got my 9856 w/ipod adapter. works good. nice clean loud signal.

i'm sure you could get a cheaper one, but don't cheap out too much or you'll just get crap.
