baffle question

I want some opinions on installing these profi mids. From my research, it seems the baffle makes or breaks a good install so I want to do it right.

1st...what is the best material? I have mdf in .25 , .5 , and .75. I have birch in .75 only.

Here is my idea:

nmc => non-hardening modeling clay

speaker --->.5" mdf--->nmc--->door--->nmc--->.75" mdf

With the .5" mdf and the .75" mdf screwed together with a nut on the other side and then the mid mounted to the new baffle

Truck is an 01 S-10.

Do you really need to bring it out that far? Using a single piece (obviously thicker) would save some work if the depth is that vital.
Also my preference...3M strip caulk, or often referred to as 'rope caulk'.
Reading up people have suggested 1 inch baffle....The truck door seems deep enough...I wanted the baffle to be very secure. The .75" piece will be behind the metal so it will actually only be brought out .5"...I can use the .25" instead....I have all kinds of mdf

No need for the added support behind the metal, if just the .5 will work...go for it. Provided it still leaves a bit of clearance behind the driver...
Sounds good...and easier....What pad do you reccomend? I have seen several and there was one kind that was mildew resistant. When I say pad, I am referring to that egg-crate looking stuff that attatches to the inner door and behind the speaker used to elminate standing waves.
