Bad amp or too small of wire?

My friend has been using my 1250.1 and he only has a 10 or MAX 8 guage power / ground wire for it, and when he turns the gains up the amp is turning off at higher volumes. When the gains are low the amp doesn't turn off at any volumes. When we have the gains and volume up the amp says "service" and turns off.
