Backslapping and breaking in?

I was wondering if as a subwoofer breaks in if backslapping or bottoming out comes easier? The reason is because I set my gains using a 40Hz -6db (47volts) and it was fine but now all the sudden on some young jezzy songs it makes a wierd noise. I even set the gains at 51 so I would have some headroom since I play it around 38-45. Turned the gains down a little more and it happened once more. Now all my other music sounds lower and weak. What should I do? Also, do you guys think a low pass filter whould help.

The part where you used a DMM and then used a -6dB test tone.

Use your ears and use your eyes; learn what a clipped signal sounds like at around 70hz and then set your gains with no crossovers on. Then make sure you're not going to over drive the sub mechanically by playing 0dB tones around the peak excursion frequencies.

Then know what those 0dB tones sound like while you are sitting up in the cabin. Don't exceed this when listening to music. Many songs will be recorded low and some will be recorded close to 0dB (most of Jeezy's songs are very close to 0dB as are many other rap songs).
