I didn't read the rest of the thread, but I'll give you my input.
I just traded in an '01 Jetta 1.8T for an '02 BMW 330xi. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Its funny that you mention the 1.8T and the BMW in the same thread.
The VW/Audi and BMW platforms are both very expensive to maintain and repair. I don't know about your experience with VW/Audi, but it seems like there is always some sensor or small part that's going bad. If you have time to troubleshoot and fix yourself, great. After a couple of years of replacing countless little parts, upgrading the downpipe and intake.....replacing the turbo, timing belt needing to be replaced......It was about time to trade it in. Only 113K miles!
BMW on the other hand, has a tendency to eat water pumps. When the water pump fails, the fan and shroud usually get taken out. Had the same thing happen on my mother in law's Z3.
Long story short, if I had the money I would go with the WRX or Lancer EVO! Both of those cars are bulletproof and easy to upgrade.
They might not have the luxury of a BMW or Audi, but they have the power and performance. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif I would do some more research, but I think they are more reliable than the VW/Audi or BMW platforms also.
