ATTN: Computer people

I think I have 2 additional RAM slots. You think it might be a good idea to get a stick of 256 and see how it is after that?
I will just say that you will be amazed. Maybe buy a stick you can return if you are not happy with the results.
I'm all for upgrading, but keep in mind that speeds are relative and every system is as fast as its slowest component. I run 768MB on my P4 1.6Ghz (@2.13Ghz) and have no speed complaints.

If you do upgrade look into DDR2, PCI Express, and the other new technologies (64 Bit). Waiting a month or 2 would probably be best to see how all this new stuff settles and what new standards are created. sup snova.

http://www.newegg.com is your friend.

you can spend anywhere from ~500 (using the old parts from your computer now, and upgrading what needs to be upgraded) all the way to 2500 (for top of the line everything)

id suggest this stuff;

ASUS K8N-E Deluxe - socket 754 ~$130

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ - socket 754 ~$185

OCZ Enhanced (512MB x 2) DDR PC-3200 ~ $245

Sapphire ATI Radeon X800 SE 256mb AGP 8x ~$340

Seagate 160GB Barracuda 7200RPM SATA HDD ~$110

then a case\psu\keyboard\mouse\speakers\monitor - but im sure you have this junk already... so thats the basics.. a 500w powersupply would do you good too... so a litle over $1,000 for a fantastic computer with all the bells and whistles. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/imdaman.gif.bc6c552e19aa4ad8c47461144f40eb1a.gif

wow. i got here when there was 0 replies. and like 10 of ya beat me to it.

but i got everything in there.

Well all this won't be happening until after X-mas, and I'm just toying with the idea right now really.

I have no clue how to build a CPU, but I'm sure I'd be able to figure it out- and my mom can help me if need be. Probably the cheapest way to go about getting what I want out of a CPU, no?

Yeah, probably the cheapest by quite a lot. The only thing you have to watch while building a PC is jumpers, or at least that's what I really had to watch (and it worked the first time around!). Just read all the instructions on everything, and you'll fare just fine.

Oh, and about the video cards...people are right that you need a good one, but in reality an x800 is not worth it at all if you don't game. I'm running a radeon 9600le, which people say is crap, but I can run Doom 3 at 1024x768 without a glitch so you make the call there. Note though, this could be due to my 2 gigs of ram and 3500+ processor....but just proves vid card is not everything.

nope. by the time a significant percentage of software can take advantage of 64 bits, youll need to upgrade to a faster processor anyway...
Yeah But I pretty much upgrade every 6 months. So I end up keeping with the flow. you know how it is. Once you buy something there is always something better coming out in a week.
