Shake that laffy taffy
Anyone know anybody or possibly own one ? I'm looking at getting a mountaineer, possibly with a 4.0 V 6 or maybe a 4.6 V8

Questions I have

- Gas mileage, is yours a AWD or is it selectable 4wd ? I know the exp. are selectable but I think all mountaineers ar AWD

- Has your 4.0 Been reliable ? I worked with a guy with a 97 ranger with 29k miles on it (4.0) and it always shit the bed on him.

- Has the truck been reliable period ? any help here would really help fellas

Thanks !

PS (Monte is for sale, $8995 for anyone on the forum, no equipment PM for details if seriously interested)

the 4.0 fords are terible moters had one in a van that i had was a piece of crap.

friend had a 4.0 in his explorer cracked the head and block.

2nd friend another explorer blew a freeze plug lost a moter

i have had 2 dif 4.6(289) 1 in a tbird 2nd crown vick easy to upgrade on power acc. both have had over 100,000 miles and still ran good

milage on the 4.6 was 16-18 in town (depends on driving habits) and on road trips i would get 22-28 mpg out of them

ya I would also reccomend the 4.6 (since they dont make new 5l anymore //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif ) also have a van kicking aroud with a 4l in it, and it sucks. but like miller said its not amazing fuel economy, I would expect 18-22 like he said..

Dunno anything bout newer explorers but my dads 97 f150 has a 4.6 and is going just fine. Bought it new and never really had any problems with it so far. As long as it was properly cared for before you, you should be fine. I guess the mpg is alright. If you're gonna buy a big ole ride with a v8, you're not gonna get much better.

Edit: just noticed it was kinda old //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif.

I owned a 02 Mountaineer w/ a 4.0 rwd. The engine was great but the ***** started slipping and giving me problems at around 50-60k. i traded it in at around 85k when the ***** was on it's last leg.....

After reading up on it AFTER I got rid of the vehicle I found out that the 02-04 all have the same common problems with the ***** crapping out.

Overall I loved the vehicle. I had he premier model which had all the options.

I'd also suggest the 4.6, If you do mostly highway driving and keep up with the oil changes it will last you a long time. My Crown Vic kicked the bucket because the oil pan rusted through and the oil leaked out down to 1 qt, before that it had great power, decent gas mileage. Plus you are moving alot of sheetmetal down the road.
