AT&T Phones

Get the att 8925 aka htc kaiser. It is a workhorse. I have used mine all over the world for heavy duty applications and connected to my laptop. It runs the windows mobile operating system and there are many cooked rom operating systems you can load into the phone. First thing to do is go to the HTC developers form and get a ROM that has all of the preloaded ATT applications removed. You will end up with a very powerful machine. You can pick up the phone for around 400 dollars unlocked.

DO NOT BIND INTO A NEW 1 or 2 year contract. Buy the phone NOT from ATT.

Contrary to popular belief you DO NOT HAVE to bind into a specific length of time contract if you are using your own equipment. You can get what ever minute/data package you want and go month to month. Again this is only if you provide your own equipment.

Also DO NOT pay for the PDA or Laptop connect data plan. You can pay for the cheapest 15 dollar per month data plan and have the identical service that you would if you paid the 30 or 60 dollars for the other plans. It is a scam.

He doesn't want a touch, that is a very good phone though!

I use a Motorola Moto Q Global. Great phone. Runs WM, full keyboard, and not too bulky. I like it much better than the blackberrys I tried out or have played with that belonged to friends.

Black berry bold end of story. I love mine. Far better than any other physical keyboard blackberry, fast browsing, great call quality, great speaker, and it holds onto 3g better than any other smartphone Ive came across. The keyboard is perfect.

I really do like the Tilt, and that may be the way I go.......seems to have the best call quality out of all of them.

I know I don't have to get into another contract with them, but I can get a new phone cheaper through them than buying a used one.

I have had almost all the other services, but I keep going back to at&t for their call quality.

make sure you take something into account before you make your final decision about going back into contract versus buying the tilt from somewhere other than ATT. (new of course, not used)

If you buy from att they WILL make you pay the 30 dollars per month for the pda connect data plan as they know what phone you have as you got it from them, this will be 60 if you tell them you will also connect to laptop. Of course that would not make sense to tell them that.

But regardless, over the period of the 2 year service contract if you get the tilt from them, that will be 180 dollars extra you will pay for your data service with them knowing you are using the tilt.

Another option for you might be the 8525 which was the model just before the tilt, labeled by att as the TYTN.

This phone is almost the same however it only slides and does not tilt, and does not have gps. you did mention i believe that gps was not necessary for you. I have had really good luck with the google maps application on my phone. can give me my location within 3 blocks using gsm towers as location points.

I really love this phone and keep an 8gb memory chip in mine. it does not seem to be super stable with a chip much larger.

Like i mentioned before go to xda developers http://forum.xda-developers.com/

the guys over there do amazing things with their phones.

So you are saying they will charge me an extra $30 just to have the phone?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Or $30 added to the cost of data plan?

Either way, that is retarded..........might as well spend the $50 on BB service then, ha ha

ill try to explain better.

att has 4 different types of data plans.

1. the blackberry plans (just a data plan with a m.s. exchange address

2. pda personal (30 dollars per month)

3. Pda personal with tethering (65 dollars a month)

4. Medianet unlimited (15 dollars per month)

The funny thing about all the data plans is that the Access point and dats server is IDENTICAL!!

when you get a pda/smart phone they will say that is 30 dollars per month for the service or 65 if you plan on tethering to your laptop.

in reality, paying the 15 dollars per month for the medianet unlimited gives you the same resources as all of the other plans. I use mine all the time and also use it connected to my laptop.

It is a complete scam. I would thing that they assume that if you are using a pda phone vs. a normal handset you are going to use more data and then the same again if you are connected with your laptop.

What the fuk ever. When i got my att contract after returning from africa i just got a family plan without contract as i already had my phone. When he asked me what device i was using i told him not to worry about it and that i swap my sim between several different phones.

So to sum up...

by not getting the phone (tilt) from them you will be able to pay att 15 dollars a month for your data which will be 180 per year or 360 for 2 years.

if you get the phone from them and get bound into the more expensive data plan that will cost you a total of 720 over the 2 year contract period.

since the 2 year contract price of the phone with rebate is 199 right now add 720 dollars to that so you will be paying 920 for the phone and data (not including your voice/minute plan.

you can get the tilt brand new on ebay for 399 dollars. or even get the earlier but also great 8525 for even less.

if you get the tilt for 399 you will pay 15 dollars a month for data bring you to a one year total of 580 or a 2 year total of 760.

Regardless you are better off in a couple of ways for not buying it from att.

1. you will save at least 160 in total

2. you are not bound into 2 years of contract and can switch att plans or even carriers without any "early termination" penalty.

3. if you buy an unlocked one not from att you have the flexibility of not having to mess with unlocking when traveling to different countries and switching around sim chips.
