as long as subs arnt bottoming out , can you play em hard?

iv had my system in for mayby 2 weeks now and there still slamming hard as ever but im still a little on the nervous side... i dont have dmm to set gains with so i basically set them by ear with 0 bass boost and pretty high gain, now dont get me wrong its not 100% but its still pretty high , the amp takes it fine, gets warm but not hot //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/up2something.gif.dd110ecf3ae4b76050d87598f2f8de7c.gif and the subs are wanging HARD but there not bottoming out or making any bad noises at all, its just amazing how much there moving without any negative side effects , when you pop the trunk and play it full volume it sounds clean and fine but once you close the trunk its impossible to tell over the rattles

so how do i use the dmm to check my gains are set? also i have been pounding on my sub hard for a few days what does a burning voice coil smell like? I can't tell if its the box wood and glue getting hot or what
