Are these speakers any good?

What can you tell me about these speakers? Are they any good? How do they compare to the Reference series?

i like the newer Type-S as they borrow from the older Type-R.

I like them more than the Reference series anymore. But both are solid options. Try to audition both, most big box stores should carry both.
