i bought the car, and it came with a 6-way custom speaker setup. rockfords in the front, and rockfords in the back, plus 2 10"s. when i turn the volume up to about 25, the speakers make a crackling sound when they hit. ( not the 10's ). are they blown? i have a sound video but idk how to upload it to the computer. ( cant find wire )

What is powering the speakers that are crackling?

Based on your description of the sound that you are hearing, I would say thet you are clipping the signal.

The speakers may or may not be blown at this point, but if you continue to clip the signal, they will blow.

When an amp is driven too hard, it's output as seen on a oscilliscope is known as a square wave. The wave is square because the tops of the wave are missing...this is why it is/looks square. The tops are "clipped" off of the wave because the amp was not able to cleanly produce the wave...hence the term clipped. The wave is not clipped at lower levels because the amp is able to cleanly produce the wave. Clipped waves can damage speakers due to thermal stress put on the voice coils.

In the past, when I listened to clipped signals, I associated the sound with a crackling sound which is why I suspected that you are clipping your speakers.

Again, what are you using to power the speakers that make the crackling sound?

Does the stereo get pretty loud before the crackling starts?, if so just simply refrain from turning the volume past that point.

Sounds pretty simple but you would be surprised at the number of people that wouldn't get it.

my sister had said 'crackling' in her '00 Durango w/Infinity system. Come to find out, all four speakers in her doors had separated the surround from the frame. I just replaced them all w/inexpensive coax's I found at CC...all better now.

Well, I don't know anything about that amp...specs or otherwise.

Lets make sure that we are on the same page: You have 2 front speakers, 2 rear speakers and 2 subs. The amp pictured above is is a 4 channel amp and is powering the fronts and rears. The fronts and rears are crackling. Correct me if I am wrong.

OK. Since you went as far as to ask other people about your problem (us), I will assume that you have checked the obvious things such as ripped speaker or anything else that will be instantly noticed at first glance. Correct me if I am wrong.

If this (my assumptions^^^^) is the case, that leaves clipping to be the culprit. My advice, get a bigger/better 4 channel amp that wont clip at the listening levels that you desire. Or, dump the rear speakers and bridge the 4 channel amp that you have down to 2 channels and power the fronts that way....if this can be done with that amp. Bridging the amp will give you more head room and would deliver more clean power to the speakers. If I were in your position, I would get a new amp.

The amp in that picture is a two channel running bridged so I think thats powering the subs and the HU is powering the front and rears.
I agree. Therefore it has nothing to do with his door speakers crackling.

Look at an amp for your fronts and rears, or get new speakers if they are still the factory ones, or just don't turn it up as loud...

yeah i agree with walker texas ranger here.....what the hell? Anyways, it sounds like your speakers are not recieving enough power and that a 4 channel amp would be a great compliment to your system. Good Luck
