AQ HDC3 Copper Coil VS Aluminum.

I tested both copper and aluminum versions of the HD3c's.........direct swap with up to 4 DD M1a's strapped on a single sub. Copper was significantly louder in all of my tests. The newest version of the HD3 aluminum coils are a little different than the ones I tested. DJ tells me they should be closer to the copper coil version than the one I tested.

copper has less imp rise, am i right?
so how are alum coils are THAT much louder. They were all pretty close in my test with lots of power.
Drawing up a 50mm winding height x 76.7mm diameter coil with a 2.84 DCR and 4-layer round wire the aluminum version has 2.50 mH of inductance and the copper has 3.19 mH of inductance.

This would lead me to believe the copper would have a higher inductive impedance rise.

The same coil in aluminum would weight about 80 grams and the copper 233 grams.

But its hard to compare so directly since AQ goes from a 4-layer copper round to an 8-layer aluminum flat in their drivers.

I did a head to head of 8-layer copper flat to 8-layer aluminum flat.

So we aren't quite testing the same things as each other //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

That is interesting - in my testing at any power level the aluminum coil was louder.

Must be the fact that I was using 8-layer flat for both and, from what I see on the site, AQ goes from 4-layer round copper to 8-layer flat aluminum.

That's probably the case. That 8 layer flat weighs a ton. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

To be honest, you really don't have to worry with the power you will be running......just get the coppers and save some cash
Yeah thats what I'm going to do. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Thanks for helping and discussing guys. Learned a lot.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/cool.gif.3bcaf8f141236c00f8044d07150e34f7.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif:cool://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif;)

This is the copper coil I was using Kyle:

Tinted,

You may be right - it may have been 1.4 dB - I was looking through my photos of scores / setups in the Jeep and I may have looked at the single 3000 test instead of the double 3000 test on the copper coil. It was a very significant difference though.

The copper coil I used may also be much heavier than what AQ uses - they may be using a shorter coil or a coil with less copper, or something like that. I am sure DJL coil chime in and let us know if his coil is lighter than the ones I was testing with. That would make a difference for sure!

I have found a very large difference with added mass, though. Simply a heavier paper cone dropped 0.4 dB in my tests. More power would not make it up, either.
Badass scale bro.

if you’re burping at resonance, that will make a big difference, copper might even have a little advantage in most cases for that one frequcny.

are you guys talking about for daily applications? or burping? i think OP will be using this for daily. 2kw on the copper coil for daily should be suitable right?
Yes, there going to be for daily. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif 1500 on each.
