AQ HDC3 18 for SQ?

I know the AQ HDC318 will get loud and sound good, but just how good does it sound. I am concerned about motor noise in a ported enclosure, suspension noise and obviously clarity and tonality. I will be playing the sub from 63Hz and down with a 24db/octave slope. I am pretty sure that their recommended enclosures are made to be peaky for SPL/SQL use, so I'll need to design a low-tuned enclosure or possibly a huge sealed.

My hdc3 18 had no mechanical noise that I could hear and it was right behind my head in my truck.

Why take a sub that is designed for for high tuned spl applications and try to make it work in SQ setup. There are subs designed for what your looking to do, ontop of that what kind of frontstage are you going to run to keep up any chance of flat top to bottom with the output of this sub?

Not saying the hdc318 sounded bad but your plan is like starting a race car build with a prius

That's not really what I am doing. According to Audioque they believe that their subs are SQ oriented subs that get loud. I was simply asking if the SQ is good enough to use in an SQ oriented install and the answer was no.

As far as my front stage, it will be more than adequate, but it won't need to "keep up" with the sub, I am looking for a sub to blend with my front stage and sound good doing it as well as get loud when I am in the mood.

Thanks for the reply.

Check again as I just resent it....

For a daily SQ car, not a comp car the AQ can do very well. Tuned at 35hz mine play very flat/clean and blend nicely with the front stage and the low xover point makes the bass come from the front stage like it should...
