It wasn't the circumstances it was the crime they got him for.

Hypothetical situation might explain it better.

Lets say you found out your wife was cheating on you. A crime of sorts was commited against you and you deserve justice. Do you ..A. Sue her in divorce court win the settlement and be done with it?

Or B. Nearly cut her head of with a big knife?

Same situation. wether he was right or wrong he did the wrong thing in the end.
