anyone know whats's wrong - pg tantrum 1200.1 amp

my friend has a tantrum 1200.1 and when he turns his volume up, even a little the amp cuts out. Now the power light stays on when it cuts out, so i don't believe it's a power issue. He also has really small speaker wire going to the sub(05 xxx 15) but that shouldn't be the cause right? Anyways, it cuts out and he changed the ground, he checked the rca's. The only thing i don't understand is that when we measure the impedance of the woofer at the amp we get 4.6 ohms. His subwoofer is a dual 1.5 and he has it wired in series, so i'm not sure why were getting a reading of 4.6 ohms.Any help is appreciated as we checked everything

That's the difference between a 3 ohm "nominal" impedance and the actual DC resistance of the coil.

so it's ok that we get 4.6 ohms at the amp and not closer to 3? well lets just say the speaker wire going from his sub to the amp is smaller than my wire for my components. When i say small it's really small(i think 22 awg) looks like just a couple strands of wire going to the amp.It is temporary but he has it there now

That wouldn't make your amp shut off though.. if anything the subs would just not play or that wire would melt

and thats why i didn't think that's what the issue was.If there was a problem with the output stage would it cut in and out. When it cuts out the power light stays on, so i really don't think power is the problem but would the amp work intermitently if there was a output problem.

I'm not sure of the symptoms but those particular models are notorious for the tri-path chip failure. If that's the case then your SOL. Those chips aren't made anymore. The part number is TA0103A. This place use to have them in stock but that was years ago.

You might be able to sell it here and if not at least get other optons as to what might be wrong if it's not the tri-path chip. This is also my home> Phoenix Gold Phorum // Index

friend called me and said the ground wire going in the amp was not connected good. Everything is ok now and thanks for the help
