anyone here into drafting?

i have 0 college at all, minus 2 classes for jet engines.

so i came in with 0 experience and have been running this show for 2+ years. i make 11.50/hr and i have 2 weeks paid this year. no insurance or any benefits really.

i am the only commercial estimator, and our commercial dept grosses $1.5mil + a year

sounds to me like your getting screwed

Probably thinks because you have zero college education you don't deserve more, or expect more. Don't take it offensively as I am just trying to tell you what he probably thinks.
let me explain how i got this job...

see what had happen was: i was in the army and was discharged. came home and was home for about a month, then a friend of my dad says the store where his brother works is needing a forklift driver/warehouse guy. so i jump on this at $8.50/hr and fully impress the owner by organizing his whole shit in the warehouse.

the current estimator at the time was on his way out to go to a different company. the owner, knowing i know about computers and electronics and stuff, asks me if i want to "move upstairs". He explains the job and i'm fuggin stoked at this offer!

so i have no idea what i'm doing to start. the old guy was NOT a good teacher, so i taught myself this whole program basically. i've been putting out bids left and right and landing way more jobs than the old guy. i get bumped to $10.50. (mind you i have no idea of this jobs worth). i keep doing the same thing, and here i am 2yrs later @ $11.50.

i know i deserve more, but like stated above he has helped me out of a few VERY tight spots. i would feel very uncomfortable asking him for a raise at this point because i actually owe him a couple grand from previous mishaps.

whats the best route. sorry for the life story, lol

I would try and find actual positions that are similar and get salarys from there and approach your employer with that, the actual jobs you have generated, and come in under the average, but obviously more than what your making now

Paper doenst really matter as much as experiance.

My boss is training me to do design work

That will give me about a 10k a year raise.

Anyone can learn autoCAD, its the skills you have with the actual work and how the process of things your working with works

such as : I work in a gas plant. I have to know that if a series of valves is in a row you will need a check valve to ensure that liquid/gas will not flow back to the original vessel.

A regualr person can just drop valves in and be done.

I go out in the field and design what i see needs to be done, speak with an engineer, and we work toghter to make a project come alive

i've done extensive work for Northrup Grumman and Army Corp of Engineers. as well as many local businesses. schools, restaurants, offices...you name it

I work for a plumbing contractor doing CAD. I do design, as-builts, shop drawings and such. I was working at a mechanical consulting engineering firm for a while doing HVAC design. I work with AutoCAD 2006 to AutoCAD 2008 MEP and also know some Revit MEP. My current salary is roughly 50K with full medical, dental, paid sick leave and 2 weeks paid vacation. I would say its ok but definitely not a lot.
