I will be starting law school in mid-august, and I am kind of scared because I have heard how tough it is compared to college. And for the type of law i am trying to get into, I need to be a top student at my school. If anyone here is currently in law school or already went, do you have any tips?

My brother is graduation from UM Law in a month or so. He never got less than an A in his undergraduate program. Law School is much more challenging and time consuming. You will have to spend more of your time studying than in undergrad if you want to do well since you are pretty much competing for grades with the other students. I might be going to law school as well.

The best advice i can give you based on what he has told me is:

Get rid of everything that does not need to be in your life. That includes drugs, drinking, stress, time consuming hobbies. Friends are very important but you really have to cut them off or they will drag you down. Spend all of your time studying. You almost have to isolate yourself. Absolutely no drama, get rid of it all. If they are true friends, they will understand.

You will read more than you could ever imagine in law school. If you aren't spending at least 50 hours per week outside of class reading, preparing, studying, its not enough. I don't know your financial situation but even if you have to drive a crap beater car for the next 3 years, its better than having financial obligations that stress you out. Don't break any laws, don't ruin your credit, don't give any legal advice. Every time you do something, ask yourself if it could jeopardize your chances of getting your license.

Didn't you just start this thread...like 2 weeks ago //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif
i thought i recall multiple threads from him about this subject. it's amazing after seeing some of audio related hazards that he is actually capable of going to law school

UM law? Is that U of Miami law or U of Michigan?

After the first year, the stress is all downhill. Your first year grades are the most important, those are the ones that will get you a job.

I'm not sure the "at least" 50 hours a week reading is true, my buddy goes to Boston Law (top 10 law school in the nation I believe) and he has a lot of extra activities going on during the week and still manages to meet up with friends on weekends. And no, he's not failing out... he's finishing his 2nd year and already has a job waiting for him when he graduates starting at $135k a year //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Yep, the first year is definitely the hardest.

The 50 hours per week might be a little high but I'd say 35 hours per week and around finals, 50 hrs for sure. You don't want to be in a spot where you might have to settle for a lesser job.

I pm'ed you back, but I am actually going to U of Miami too. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif That's why i asked which UM you were talking about.

wow, 50 hours a week!!? I do about 2 hours per week right now in college, but that is during tests/finals. During the regular work week i do like 1 hour or less a week out of class, but I still have a pretty high GPA.

I've posted more in your law school threads than anywhere else in this forum the past 6 months. You will be fine, don't get caught up in the "OMG law school is impossible" crap. just time manage and you will be fine. I studied 0 hours at UF during undergrad (except during finals week and I picked an easy major), and I am doing fine thus far. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif You will be "briefing", not necessarily just memorizing a book. Also, nobody is your true friend at law school..they all backstab you; it's sad but true.
