Need to get a little farther north I think. Putting up taps and maintaining vaccuum lines is the worst bit. Always deep snow, very cold, and my land is a pretty steep slope. Even in snowshoes it's slow going hiking up and down loaded down with tools and such. Otherwise it's mostly just throwing wood into a big firebox for 10-12 hours at a whack. Burned through about 4 logging trucks full of wood last year.

Vid from last year. Got a hood over the back pan this season which helps efficiency and makes it a little easier to see inside.

I think you need a good stretch of weather below freezing for it to work, the sap runs when the days first start getting above freezing. 3 or 4 days of 60 degree weather is pretty much the end of your season.

Who knows, put some taps in those trees with some empty milk jugs to collect sap and see what you get for sap. I know guys make syrup as far south as Kentucky for sure...but Kentucky can get pretty cold.

I already said I was in bro...keep up.

Are there farmers on it 24/7 slaving away like they are on their last breath ready to die?
I don't get it, that's what they're making it sound like.

Guys, I work on a farm, planting season/harvest season, and for all repairs in between. My boss, a farmer of 40-some-odd years, told me to never listen to a farmer who says he works his *** off. All it is is sitting in a tractor letting it do the work. That's exactly what farming is. And it came from a guy living on his farm all of his life. He told me as we were taking corn out of the field in a combine! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/hilarious.gif.02a037aad04aa96f19982b298a3d70a8.gif Sure, the hours are tough, during the time that we do work, but the money's good. We've got 5 months in between seasons to do what we want. Please don't make such a huge deal on it. I realize the work is long, but don't act like it's the hardest job in the world.

Made 300 gallons last year. Just over 100 this year. About 20 gallons shy of break even. Working on doing more value-added stuff though to improve profit on what I do make.

Not my only business fortunately, so I'm not going to starve this year (or go without audio), but some plans to expand will be pushed back. I love working the land, and look forward to growing to a stage where that is my main business.

You could do 8 or 10 gallons on a DIY evaporator.... stainless pan on top of either brick or block firebox (like a BBQ pit) or make one out of half a 50 gallon drum. Lots of guys do that and it seems to be a good excuse to stay up late, drink beers, and play cards with your buddies. Doing it bigger scale leaves little time for anything else when the season is on.
