I've got an 80 gig from them (Caviar 7200 I think) that I've had for about 6 weeks now. I bought it from best buy for $90 bucks with a $30 & $20 mail-in-rebate...so 40 bucks in the end.
I use this hard drive for all my music stuff. Well, weeks after using it, I start hearing noises (not the usual clicking sounds which are the tell-tale sign of a bad hard drive). Looking in Event Viewer, I get all these "hard disk has a bad block" messages (app=disk/err #7), "didn't respond within the timeout", and "error during paging operation". Also, it kept reverting to PIO (programmed I/O) over using DMA (direct memory access)...in other words using your CPU to transfer data (which is very slow & takes a lot of CPU utilization as compared to dma) instead of directly accessing memory to read or write...
then I got this one:
I put in an advance-rma (they send me the new drive before I send them the old, but charge your credit card if not received in 30 days) with western digital and the drive came yesterday. I was surprised they used second-day-air...I successfully backed up everything which is good but if you look at the above pic, all those disk & atapi errors were encountered...
...so, anybody have any problems with western digital, or am I just the typical isolated case?
