Hola ?

I will be 18 next year and will look into buying a rifle. I will do target shooting and maybe some hunting so i want something that i cant do everything with. Ive been told that the 30-O6 is pretty much the best all around for everything. I was wondering about a 7mm, 30-30 and maybe a 300 short mag. I will be getting my loads custom made and will eventually do it myself.

My question is if different from the 30-O6 or just want to x2 on that one, What is the best rifle for all around use ?????

well if your going to do target shooting you dont want a 30 06 or any gun like that. they kick to hard and will be no fun to shoot..esp the next morning. now i would suggest a 25 06 seeing as i have one of my own and it is the smoothest and most accurate gun i have ever had a chance at shooting. now another good gun if your looking into 7mm is the 7mm 08. its probably the best gun in its class unless you want a 7 mag and that is no fun to shoot either. my final word is the 25 06, they do serious damage and are a very fast accurate round.

.270 is a great hunting round and is more than enough for any north american big game, say out to about 400-500yds.

imo, if you want the best of both worlds, look into a good .308.

the .308 is 90% what a 30.06 is, the extra 10% being the 30.06's kick.

i hunt with both a .270(ruger m77) and a .308(carol gustave sweed with a custom made kimber fluted heavy barrel)

my .308 is more my target rifle and i have had outstanding sucess with it out to 1000yds(ft benning's range). we have hunting property in richland ga and as of now, i have the longest kill on the biggest deer in our hunt group.

365yds on a 9pt, 245lbs using my .308.

imo, look for a good med.heavy barreled .308.

imo a 270 is a terrible cartridge. now the short mag version is an improvement but to me there are just so many better rounds out there

why would you say that? ballistics near the same as a 30.06 and 10x flatter shooting. if you hand load it gets even better.(same goes for almost every round though)

a nother great round would be a 7x57 for hunting. you would need to hand load these rounds though as the factory ammo is "down loaded" due to the age of a lot of the rifles that chamber this round.

Ive been thinking Thompson Center Encore 30-06
Good guns. I personally am not a fan of a single shot though. If that buck comes through chasing a doe I want to be able to pop off a few rounds.

270...its got great stopping power, would be good for targetry and the flatest traveling round out there. The best traditional round on the market to date IMPO.
What makes you think its the flattest traveling round?

25-06 best all around cartridge target all day and not get the kick like the 30-06 imo
25-06 is a good choice, but I prefer more energy.

I won't say its a terrible cartridge, but definitely highly over rated. One plus is the wide variety of factory loads available for it.

I personally will never use one for any kind of deer hunting. If a marginal shot is made, I want more power than a .270 has to offer. Of course if you always hit them where you are supposed to, the deer won't run 100 yards even with a .243. But the thing is shit happens. Not many people can make perfect shots at 200 yards or on running deer. Sometimes your scope may be off.. Sometimes you may hit a limb. Etc, etc.

I'd highly recommend a Tikka T3 Lite in .300WSM. Thats my current deer rifle and my favorite out of any gun I have ever shot. Comes with a Sako barrel, is 1.5-2lbs less than other .300s, and guaranteed MOA accuracy out of the box. The recoil is not near as bad as you'd think it'd be either. I could shoot it all day long. I shoot hand loaded 165 grain Nosler Partitions out of mine. Can cut the same hole at 100 yards.

The main thing is to hold several guns, shoot some if you can, and choose whatever YOU feel is best.

I shot a 30-06 from the time I was 10 until I was 17. Excellent caliber also. As someone previously mentioned, the .308 is like its little brother. Both calibers have a shit ton of great factory loads available.

one of our hunt club members uses a 300 wssm, quite the round imo.

ive been thinking about having a barrel made for my sweed in 300wsm.

its a long action bolt so i have quite a few options. i have a barrel in 7.57 for it as well and with hand loads it has some great take down power as well. the factory ammo for the 7.57 today are just way under loaded(for before stated reasons) but good hand loads bring it right to life.

i am considering the 300wsm as my next round.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I haven't taken a shot further than 140 yards with mine yet, but really want to. One of my honey holes is a road where I can shoot 400 yards both ways. The past two years I have had chances to pop a nanny at 400 yards but haven't. Think I may this year though and get someone to film it. Did take a doe at 300 yards with my dads .300 Win. Mag when I was 17.

I have never fooled with a 7.57 or seen anyone with one. May read up on it some.
