Not that I have ever seen, most demo boards at at car audio shops do not have the antennas hooked up.

i dont have an antenna in my boat. a chick i know doesnt even have one hooked up in her car. he family owns a car audio shop too. biggest JL dealer around.

No, it's not necessary if the head unit is wired correctly. Sometimes when the ground wire isn't connected, the head unit will ground itself through the antenna. In this case the head unit will shut off when the antenna is removed.
