Amp w/ separate inputs 4 front & rear: Can/should I use only 1 input 4 all full range

Title says it: I'm looking to buy 2 (4 ch.) amp and most 4 channel amps have separate inputs for the front and rear channels... But I only have 3 preamp outputs on my H.U. and so I'd like to not need a 2nd input to one of the amps...If I'm going to run all 4 channels of an amp off of the same frequency range (prior to the amp crossover) , can I use a single input without losing the ability to adjust the gain on the amp independently for each pair of outputs?

Thanks for all the help guys.

WHY????

Yeah, I thought I could do that but I've heard that there's a pretty substantial loss in SQ when you split like that... Is there an economical 3 pre-amp in- 4 way out active crossover, that way I could split them all equally and gain something in the process? I thought about the audiocontrol 6xs> Is that a good solution?
