Amp shutting off when volume starts to get loud

I have two jl w3 10s and a alpine pdx 1.1000. The subs and amp sound great and the gain was set with a dmm but the amp shuts off when I turn the volume up. I am not turning it up to a crazy level, just what I would consider decently loud. I know that the subs and amp should be able to handle this volume easily, but they are not. The idiot that installed my amp used 8 gauge wire instead of 4, which I think he should have. Could this be what is causing the problem, or is it something such as the battery?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance

set your gain with a dmm using a 50hz tone with the volume at the highest you plan to play it at. Also, it may be shutting off due to voltage drop or your clipping the shit out of it and its overheating.
