Amp Overheating

Hey, my amp is overheating lately for some reason, it's never done this before. I'm thinking it could be because my subs are underpowered by about 500 rms. The subs are power acoustik fubr-12, and my amp is rockford fosgate 601s, i'm guessin this is happening because my subs are underpowered but like i said this has never happened before, does anyone else have any ideas?

well its not because ur subs are under powered, thats for sure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

dont think if ur subs were under powered that u would be getting this problem sooner and not just recently?

or did u switch to these subs from something else?

Lol, see this is the problem, they were wired for 4 ohms the whole time and i had em on each channel on my amp (2 ohm min. rockford says) and never had this problem. Only thing different now is that i have a second 4 channel amp for my other speakers, and i have a 4 guage wire run back to both amps and both amps connected with an 8 guage wire (sub amp was on 8 guage before), so i really dont see the problem. Anything wrong with that setup maybe?

well all i can think of is 2 senarios(sp?)

ur either running each channel @4ohm and really under powering ur subs (still doesnt explain the problem but i took this from what u wrote)

or ur running each channel @1ohm which ur amp doesnt like/want (this would explain the over heating)

I have each sub wired just like this, except hooked up to 2 ohm instead of 4 ohm, but its been like that for almost 2 years with no problems. Now, for the amps being wired to power, i have a 4 guage wire from the battery to my power cap, from the power cap i have 2 8 guage wires, 1 to my 560 4 channel amp and one to my 1800 2 channel amp (the sub amp, and it can only take up to 8 guage wire). That is exactly how everything is wired.

Two subs..... running series-parallel i assume for 2ohms...

Best thing to do is Un-do the last thing you did, troubleshoot a little... take that power cable off and disconnect that other amp, and wait for the sub amp to cool way down, then run just that amp alone and see if it still gets hot like it did....

If it dont, then make sure the other amp isnt shorting or have some faulty component causing a weak-short circuit perhaps.... maybe that amp is crap... ??
