amp output voltage calc?

I think the 75% volume rule for the DMM is retarded. Most good HUs dont clip untill they are **** near maxed out. You are leaving a lot of potential behind.
You're missing the point of the rule. It's not to get 100% output power from your HU, it's to establish a maximum listening volume. You can use whatever level you like from the HU to set your gains, because the gain knob itself is going to compensate for the difference in levels. But say you set your gains with your HU volume at 35/40 then when you're listening to it, you shouldn't turn the HU past 35 because you could potentially be clipping. You could also set it with your HU at 30/40 but the same rule applies (don't go past 30). It's not necessarily supposed to be 75%, I tell people to use the maximum listening volume, i.e. the loudest you care to turn your HU up on average.

This is an excellent tutorial, complete with visuals: JL Audio » header » Support » Tutorials » Tutorial: Input Sensitivity (Gain) Setting

Or this is also good (from our sticky) http://trussinme.com/Apps/audio/voltagecalc/default.asp

A: how is 50 a good frequency to use, I've heard 2 things one that it should be an octave lower than the lowest xover freq (assuming most ppl have this at 80-90 I guess 50 is close to that. Another thing I've heard is that you use that tone because it is the middle of the range you have that speaker playing.
Cheap DMMs are designed for accuracy around 50-60Hz, because that's the frequency of 120VAC power at home. Get away from there, and accuracy will drop unless you have a DMM designed for a wider bandwidth.
