amp goes into protection very quickly

I got a carver kmos 2200 (old school) and I'm runnin a 10w3 off of it. After about 10 seconds of bumping not even that loud the amp will quit, and then I'll turn the volume down and it will come back on it about 10 seconds. Why does it do this? I have the gain pretty far down. It did this with my 2 cerwin vega subs too. Should I just turn the gain down so far it barley bumps but doesn't go into protection?

What is the coil config on the w3? What are the specs on the amp? It is possible you are running too low of an impedance for that amp...

check the power and ground. how do you have the subs wired? do you that them wire down to 1 ohm or something like that, if so can you amp handle that?

Sounds like you might be running your amp at too low of an impedence.

Speaking of which, where is it grounded? If the impedance is not the problem then I would relocate the ground cable.

Dmm? I'm runnin the sub at 2homs I have NO IDEA the specs on the amp agian its a carver kmos 2200 if anyone can find specs on it I'll give them a cookie. I was talkin to one person who knows alot about carver car audio and he said all the amps he's seen are 2 ohm stable.

DMM - Digital Multimeter, can be found at WalMart and Home Depot for ~$20; it will read voltage and is a handy tool to have around.

Is the amp mono?

Some old school amps don't go that low... Rewire for 8 ohms?

Okay I found this from an old thread on some other forums from google

KMOS 2200 2 Channel 2X170 @2 OHM 2X100 @4

If this is correct, and you are running it bridged @ 2 ohms then there is your problem.

No you are not giving the subwoofer too many watts.... You COULD BE (you have not told us yet) but you could be running the amp at too low of an impedance causing it to go into protect mode.
