Amp for older sub...?

I have a friend who just recently got a new sub (jl w6) and he offered to give me his old sub (a few years old dei 400rms 12in sub or so he says) for free. I'm just curious what amp I would need for such a thing, I'm only thinking of using this sub as a place holder til i can afford a shiva or something and as such need a amp that could work well now and work with a shiva class sub or so.

well do you want a amp that you can use if you do replace your sub down the road or do you just want a amp that will get you by for now?

I would prefer a amp that I could use with a better sub down the road. I was thinking maybe something in the 500-600w power range as I figure my stock electrical system could handle something of that power easily. I would say that i probley have around a $200-300 limit on a amp, so suggest away. I probley should have just made the topic for this best 500-600w amp for $200-300.

I was just reading about the Jl 500/1 amp, it any good and is it real pricey? Does the Jbl 600.1 compare well to it?

jl 500/1 is a really good amp, but they average about 300 dollars. The jbl 600.1 can be had for under 200 at http://www.ikesound.com and http://www.bsless.com

Well I was thinking today, the next sub that i will get will probley be a 12" Shiva (very cheap and has good mix of spl & sq), so which amp would be better for that sub? The Jl 500/1 or the Jbl 600.1, I don't mind saving a month longer for the Jl amp if it would be a better match down the road. Anyways thanks for the suggestions.

the JBL puts out about about 100 watts more

the JL has a lot more features, including a subsonic filter and it puts out full power at anywhere from 1.5 to 4 ohms

the JBL will cost about $170 less (ebay prices)
