amp draw and battery equation - is there one and how to find out

ok, lets say you have a HO alt running 280 amps or something, and you have alot of current that is going to be pulled from your battery under the hood and ever how many you have in the back.... how do you figure out how many amps you are pulling...maybe i have not confused you yet, how do you look at battery specs and say oh ok i need 10 of those g31 batts or something like that to be able to have the juice to give to your amps for say bassrace or daily. i need a serious bank of power and i am just trying to figure out what batts to buy and or start researching to get the rack built. thanks
