You can get great deals at dealerships. It is about the right timing and you not being afraid of walking away. IMO mileage is not a concern IF it is unusually high. Corporate lease vehicles tend to rack up highway miles, which is equil to a lot lower city/highway. Deals can be had on a late model high mileage vehicle. Last winter I bought my Wife's 05 escape for 2k under trade in value due to timing, situation, and me sticking to my price after an hour of negotiation. I went up $50. I wad walked away from about 8 dealerships and a few private individuals to get to where I was and I am still just as pleased with the purchase as I was then. The mileage was high but I could tell by the lack of wear on the drivers seat, floor, and pedals and by simple math that it was highway.

Research, low ball, stick to a price, and walk away. That is what my father in law told me and it has worked well a the few times I have bought newer vehicles.

yeah definitely don't buy that..

Or epically good at negotiating at car dealers? I went to a ford dealer ship to see what pre-owned cars they had. After test driving a few cars, I ended up test driving a 2008 ford fusion SEL. I liked it a bit, the guy tricked me into the negotiating room. Ive never bought a car before, so when he said they were gonna see what possible deals I could get I believed them. I had no intentions of buying, just seeing what kinda price they would offer.
I quickly realized they were gonna try to get me to buy the car. They started talking about payments and such, and I said the most I could do was 13k in cash and had good credit. They were asking if I wanted to buy it. I said no that I still want to look at other cars and that Im not ready to buy. They started to get desparate, the guy doing the deal left and got his manager. He tried to negotiate with me for a good 15min, adding lil things like free tint and stuff the entice me. I kept saying no. He eventually offered to take 4k off the asking price and pay me 2k for my current taurus as a trade in, then I could pay 10k cash and the car would be payed off.

Guess what I said? No. Am I an idiot for passing this up? The fusion was okay. But I still wasnt sure that was the car for me, even with the deal. Whatever car I buy Im keeping for a long time. So I didnt want to regret it buying a car right then and there when I already had no intentions of buying anything.

Anyways, thats my lil story from earlier today. Heres a link to the car.

Well they are car salesmen, its their job to try and entice you into buying. You should have thought of this before you entered the lot, let alone once they asked you into the 'negotiating' room. You could be straight up honest and say "Im just here for the free burger" during their 'tent event' and they would still try and talk you into buying something. Anyone who works on commission, as those guys do, will work with the same attitude, be it a car salesman or a realtor when you are house shopping.
But no, you aren't dumb, just not experienced yet. You will understand better once you are in this position a couple times.

any car is a bad deal

a car is not an investment

a car is something you dont plan on making money on unless its extremely rare and in 100% mint condition.

Most cars lose thier value really really fast

even with 42k the cars blue book is around 17K at the dealer
