Alright SPL guys, what is the deal with the dowel rods in large enclosures?

there is a misconception here real SPL guys dont use dowels period ive see the loudest cars in the world and none of them do this crap

thats an sq thing to stop/reduce box vibrations it helps when you listen to music not when you burp laminar flow is what you need in spl dowels and shelf bracing hurt not help spl they dont help spl

Ram, is the cu ft (air) space in your enclosures equal to that of the requirement of the subwoofer? Also do the subs, for the enclosures that house the entire sub, need to be inverted? Or can I just house two 12s and give them what they need and be done with it? Or is there more involved? Yeah lots of questions. Thanks a lot guys. I cannot go wrong with this forum.

judging by attendance id agree with you
but the OP asked SPL guys not regular caraudio guys thats why i answered

I used dowels when I was competing for a short time. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I guess I was just trying to say that there are a lot of casual competitors that still use them. I understand that more serious competitors have more reason to go all out.

Try to stick with 1.25-1.5". A good way to get a larger bracing point is to cut your dowel 1.5" shorter than the span you're bracing. Use a hole saw to cut 2.5-3" diameter circles out of MDF to put on each side of the dowel, and you have yourself more surface area contact than a 2x4 while taking up 1/3 the space.
great idea....never thought of that
