I just installed alpine R type components..... SPR-17S to be exact in my 2001 silverado. The speakers are def better than stock, they are way more clear. The only thing i dont like is when you turn them up pretty loud... to like a jam out level they start to crackle. Idk why that is, i thought after market speakers would be able to handle that power. Another thing is i dont even see how people amp them, it seems liek my truck is already too powerful for them.

ANy tips or suggestions would help. thanks

Are you running them off of an amplifier or a stock head unit? Crackling is usually distortion/clipping and is not good for the speakers. If you aren't, I would definately suggest an upgrade to a nice 2 channel amplifier for those speakers if you want to listen to them at higher volumes.

nope i have a Clarion DXZ 725 head unit i believe its 50 W by 4 channels. I guess i don't understand this whole amping of the components thing. if you amp them doesnt it mean your giving them more power because yur car cant give them enough power to work right? the sound that mine make sounds like the truck is already too powerful... like its a crappy speaker. I have never heard anyone tell me that alpine equipment is crappy especially their typr R stuff. i just cant understnad how they could be possibly under powered... im so confused and frusterated.

pretty much the speakers are pissing me off right now

i noticed when i put them in that you could change this little peg on the corssover fro diff dB levels... does anyone know what all that means... that could possibly be my prob

what you are hearing is distortion.that head unit says 50wx4,which means you are getting around 22-25 wts rms.when you turn it up you get a clipped signal hence crappy sound. try them with 100watts+ of clean power with a amp . nite and day differance.

GET AN AMP. it will sound clean, and not distorted.

ok so if you guys think amping is the problem.. what kind and style of amps do yor recommend. I dont want to buy cheap stuff, but at the same token i don't want to spend 500 for a new amp.

its so hard to believe that speakers will clip and be distorted when under powered. thats prob why they say its bad for subs if they are underpowered too much.

the head unit power is what is doing the clipping.you probaly get good sound until it reaches that point.but turn it past that you get the cheap speaker sound! lots of comps including those r's need a good dose of clean power to get what is expected from your speakers.

This one will work for your setup, it's 4 channel, but run it "bridged" in 2 channel mode for 100 watts per channel.

That's 200 dollars for 200 watts at 4 ohms... 200 clean watts, get this before marley fest if you can

i went and talekd with the local sound shop here in town and they told me all the same stuff. Hes giving me a good deal on a apx2121 clarion amp its a 200 watt amp 80 by 2 channels so that should be plenty. Also im getting 2 10 JL W1s ran by a kicker amp i already have and a box that fits under the back seat. so it should be soundin good real soon.
