Alpine cda-9886 questions

i have an alpine cda 9886, i use a 8gb usb right now for my music. i was looking at purchasing a 160gb i pod but dont want to spend the money on something that wont be able to work with my head unit. i have thought of using a HDD considering i have an old 250gb western digital, but i have read that it wont work for various reasons. long story short i would like to hear your guys' experiences with this, what you have seen or read. thanks in advanced.
